Events

Below are the most important traditional events and workshops we sponsor every school year.  Check your Monthly Bulletin and its calendar for exact dates.

Summer Reading Challenge

Summer is a great time to read, read, read!  Reading and English skills are kept up while spending time in the  best type of self-entertainment.  Students arrive in August with their reading lists appropriately filled out and signed by a parent.  Recognition is given during a lunchtime celebration with all Summer Reading Challenge participants, and a drawing of a special prize is held for all that read at least two books!

Parent Orientation of Accelerated Reading (AR)

This workshop is offered twice a year, in September and again in January, to help parents support their child's reading development.  This computer program is utilized by all students grades 2-8 and some even in first grade.  It consists of monitoring students' independent reading comprehension and vocabulary growth.

Used Book Sale

Often, people in the CIC community donate their used-yet-in-good-condition books to be recycled.  The resulting assortment of books and magazines provides a variety of topics and authors to choose from.  The books are sold very economically to make sure they find a new home.  Most books are in English, but occasionally some in Spanish may also be available for purchase..  Proceeds go to the Mothers Club.  Find our table at the Holiday Bazaar and also at our Annual International Day.

Holiday Reading Challenge

We also have a celebration for reading done by 1st through 5th grade students during the holidays.  They return in January with their reading lists appropriately filled out and signed by a parent.  A special recognition is given to each during a special lunchtime celebration with all Holiday Reading Challenge participants, and a drawing for a special prize is held for all students that read at least two books!

Read Across CIC

We recognize Dr. Seuss' s grand contribution to children's literature by sponsoring this hour-long activity each year in early March.  Student groups work on a variety of projects that applaud a particular literary work, though not necessarily from Dr Seuss.  Each student group consists of a class from the secondary school and an elementary or early childhood class.

Earth Day Book Swap

Students from 1st to 5th grades have this excellent opportunity to acquire new books for pleasure reading.  By donating their own already-read-but-in-good-condition books, the students are able to choose the same number of books from the Book Swap collection
